Mir was the first modular space station ever built. It was assembled and operated in low Earth orbit from 1986 to 2001, first by the Soviet Union and later by the Russian Federation. It was part of the Soviet space program and could accommodate up to 6 people during crew exchanges, including the historic STS-71 mission, although the typical long-duration crew consisted of 3 cosmonauts.
