The Voyager Program employed two space probes, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2, both launched in 1977—taking advantage of a rare favorable planetary alignment—to study the outer Solar System and the interstellar space beyond the Sun’s heliosphere. Both probes also carried a gold-plated audio-visual disc containing sounds and images from Earth, intended for a hypothetical extraterrestrial civilization that might one day encounter them.
